Penn Station: Layers Beneath the Surface (and Beyond)

This is an exploration walk, not a formal or tightly planned event. We’ll move slowly inside Penn Station and possibly the subway system, following clues rather than a fixed route. If time allows, we may take the subway south to 14th Street Station and possibly City Hall / Brooklyn Bridge Station to look for remnants of earlier station layouts. I’ll be poking around for sealed stairways, unusual walls, strange floor levels, and other traces of the old system, sometimes visible only through grates or from odd corners. Please bring OMNY and curiosity.

Meet inside Penn Station, Manhattan, at the red wall gate to the LIRR Services & Waiting Area (see Photo 1).
