We the Walkers! A Semiquincentennial Outing (5 miles)
Details
Happy 250th Birthday, USA!
The founding of this nation involved a lot of … paperwork. Huzzah! In honor of the Semiquincentennial, let’s take a walk and see some revolutionary records on display. About a mile into the 5-mile route, we’ll visit Grey Art Museum: The Declaration of Independence: Long Trail to Liberty. Then, we’ll continue our way, ending at the New York Public Library where walkers may visit the exhibit Declaring America: 1776 and Beyond on their own (not officially part of the walk).
NOTE: The exhibits are comprised almost entirely of documents. If that isn’t of interest, please skip this walk. Read pinned comment below.
Along the route, we'll pause briefly to point out what we see, like parks, public art, a wizard.
Group size is small to ensure the gallery visit and city hike are comfortable and manageable.
Start time: 10:30am to check in and use restroom. Walk begins at 10:45am.
Start location: Please understand this walk is limited to Shorewalkers who RSVP and are on the Attendees/Going list on this Meetup page. Attendees to meet the group at Vesuvio Playground, 99 Thompson Street between Spring & Prince. Nearest subway is C,E at Spring Street. Check in with the walk leader near the playground entrance. There is a restroom in the park.
Approx end time: 3pm’ish. We might end earlier or later.
End location: New York Public Library, 41st St & 5th Ave.
Distance: about 5 miles.
Pace: Moderate.
Terrain: We'll be in busy sections of the city, and some sidewalks are likely to be crowded mid-day in midtown. Also, there will be stretches of the route in the sun (though we’ll veer to the shady side when we can). Mostly flat.
Bring: Water, food. Please come prepared; we are not stopping to make food purchases.
NOTE: The Grey Gallery enforces the rule about no backpacks or large bags in the gallery. Be ready to store your backpack/bag in the lockers. The NYPL requires visitors to walk through a metal detector at entrance and inspects bags at exit.
Bathrooms are at the meeting spot, at the gallery, 1 mile after the first gallery, at 3-mile mark, at end location.
Contact: If needed, reach walk leader before the walk by text 917-847-1536 (no phone calls).
