A Leisurely Walk through Green-Wood Cemetery on the 25th anniversay of 9/11

Please join me on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 for a leisurely walk through the 478-acre Green-Wood Cemetery followed by the Notes of Tribute ceremony memorializing the people who died that day as well as those who have died since then due to exposure to the toxins. We will be walking approximately 2-3 miles on uneven terrain and uphill paths.
The walk segment of the event ends at 6:45 PM. Green-Wood's Notes of Tribute: Viewing the 9/11 Memorial Lights starts at 7 PM.
Our stops will include the highest natural point in Brooklyn, Battle Hill, which commemorates the Battle of Brooklyn, also known as the Battle of Long Island. This section of the cemetery contains the sculpture Minerva and the Altar to Liberty, the Civil War Soldiers’ Monument, graves of soldiers, Union and Confederate, who fought and died in the Civil War. In addition to looking at the graves and mausolea of several notables, we will also stop at the art installation Here Lie the Secrets of the Visitors to Green-Wood Cemetery, where you can drop your very own secrets.
Meet at 3:30 PM inside the Gothic arches. The walk starts promptly at 3:45 PM; we will not be waiting for latecomers.
Directions to the Cemetery: Take the R train to 25th St (and 4th Ave.) and walk uphill on 25th St to the cemetery gates on 5th Ave. Continue to walk uphill through the gothic arches. Restrooms are to the left of the arches. There are no restrooms until near the end of our walk.
Green-Wood is an active cemetery, so please be respectful of funerals in progress and people visiting gravesites. The cemetery also cautions visitors against leaning on gravestones and other funeral-related structures.
Bring snacks, beverage, and dinner if you are planning to stay for the 9/11 event. You can pick up lunch or snack items from the bakery across the street from the cemetery. Walk up the street from the subway station and turn right for the bakery.
Wear footwear appropriate for paths with cobblestones, tree roots, and other obstructions. Hiking poles would be helpful. You might also bring a hat and insect repellent.
Pace: Please note that this is a slow and leisurely walk; leader sets the pace.
Note: If you are planning to attend the Notes of Tribute event, you might want to bring a towel or blanket to sit on the grass, and also a light jacket. Although picnicking / sitting on the grass is not allowed during cemetery hours, there are no such restrictions for the after-hour events.
RSVPs open at 9 AM on Wednesday and close at 9 AM on Friday. Please check your schedule and your availability before registering for this walk.
