Walk in with a blank page. Walk out with a finished draft.

Sometimes the hardest thing about writing fiction is just finishing things. As writers, we find ourselves struggling to concentrate, prone to distraction, or slow to motivate ourselves. In the attempt to create the perfect story, we can find ourselves lost in our thoughts, middling over tedium, and working on stories that never see the light of day - because we just could not get ourselves to the point of writing that last sentence.

But in the pursuit of perfection, there is something vital that gets lost. Finishing things.

Finishing things has its own value. In this workshop we will be working within a guided structure that uses prompts, sprints, and other techniques that will facilitate the creation of a completed (or nearly completed) story.

Some of what we'll be doing:

  • Warm up prompts.
  • Self-mining (figuring out what we want to say).
  • Discussion.
  • Short-fiction writing sprints.
  • Evaluation.
  • Refining what has been written.

We will each be creating original pieces of Flash Fiction (1,500 words or less) - since that is an amount that can be realistically completed in a single evening.

In this workshop we will be focusing on finding our voices, building momentum, honing our craft, and being in the company of other writers.

Some benefits of creating short fiction:

  • Expand your portfolio with more stories.
  • Increase your body of work for submission to publishers.
  • Build and sustain creative momentum.
  • Strengthen your creative confidence.
  • Refine your creative process.
  • Gain insight from completed projects to improve future ones.
  • Grow as a writer.

Join us on Wednesday night if you’re tired of struggling alone.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
