The Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings in Ditherington, Shrewsbury, is a Grade I listed site recognized as the world's first iron-framed building and the "grandfather of skyscrapers".
Architectural Innovation

  • First Iron Frame: Built in 1797, the Main Mill used an internal skeleton of cast-iron columns and beams.
  • Fireproofing: Designed by Charles Bage, this iron structure replaced traditional wood to prevent catastrophic factory fires.
  • Steam Power: Early operations used a Boulton and Watt steam engine rather than a water wheel, allowing placement next to the Shrewsbury Canal.

Operational Eras

  • Flax Mill (1797–1886): Processed flax into linen yarn and thread. It grew to be Shrewsbury's largest employer, relying on hundreds of workers, including women and child apprentices.
  • Maltings (1897–1987): Converted by William Jones into a floor maltings processing barley for beer. Many windows were bricked up, and a kiln and hoist tower were added.
  • World War II: Served temporarily as a military barracks and infantry training center.
