What we're about

Sign up to host your own Shut Up & Write!

For online events, check out our Online Events Meetup.

Shut Up & Write hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress.

What to Expect

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled at an in-person event. Our host will lead introductions and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time.

Afterward, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

Shut Up and Write!

Barnes & Noble Booksellers Scottsdale Center

Thank you everyone for being so patient while life begins to move back to normalcy. Now that places are becoming more open, all writers are welcome. Whether you write poetry, screenplays, novels, music, etc. anyone is welcome. Shut Up and Write meetings are meant to provide a safe space for writers to remove themselves from distractions and focus on their writing while being able to be surrounded by others who can offer support and accountability. While you may think that you are the only one facing certain struggles, you will be surprised that someone else may have already dealt with it and can offer advice. The meeting will be split up into three distinct parts.
6:00-6:15: Introduction and catching up. Starting off, when you show up to the meeting, look for the tall guy with a beard and glasses in the cafe. We will take turns introducing ourselves and what we are working on. Even if you do not arrive at the start, feel free to join in at any time.
6:15-7:15: Shut Up and Write! For the next hour we will focus on our writing. While you are free to do whatever you want, it is highly recommended to limit talking to allow for everyone to focus as best as possible on their own writing.
7:15-7:30: Finishing up. After the hour has finished, I will let everyone know. At this point, I will open conversation to whoever wants to share what they got out of their time writing. Along with the good, I want to hear any struggles that you are facing or anything I can do to make the next meeting better.
While the group writing session will only last an hour, feel free to stay longer, whether to write or socialize, beyond the meeting.
