What we're about

Shut Up & Write!™ is more than a movement, more than a good idea. We’re a method of writing that delivers. As an international organization, we are thousands of writers in a worldwide community, but most importantly, we are writers who write together in a local cafe. Join us.

We have events every week, all over. Sometimes we talk after. Whatever you’re writing, whatever form it takes, wherever you are in your process, you won’t be the only one.

And if you need help with your writing, we offer that too.

Meetup Event Format

It is an empowering and rewarding experience to write an hour each week, at the same time and place. It serves as powerful support for building your daily writing discipline.

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled. At the Meetup our Organizer will lead introductions and then everyone will sit down and write.
Afterwards, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. The Shut Up & Write!™ format brings a social facet to a normally isolated craft.

Our Meetups are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don't feel I should be doing something else.“ - Gloria Steinem

This is your time to write.

Shut Up & Write!™ Honolulu

The Lanai

Join us for 1.5-2 hours of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 6:00 on Monday evenings. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 6:00 - Show up! Quick hello. Write for 1-1.5 hours 7:30 - Continue to write OR take a break. Take the time to discuss writing, share our writing for critique/feedback, or simply socialize. 8:00 - (the end) chat / take off / keep writing. The Lanai closes at 9 PM. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens earlier before 6 pm OR around 7/7.30 pm. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes commiserating!) with other writers is a cool thing. We can get to know each other & discuss writing, writing techniques, ideas, and critiques of each other's writings. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (Look for Amy with the Shut Up & Write! sign). If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. WHAT SHOULD I BRING? Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you need to block out distractions (it does get noisy in there) A jacket or sweater (it gets pretty cold in there) Electrical outlets are hard to come by so it is best to have your laptop charged prior. OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS: - The Lanai does have wifi. - Mondays have happy hour until 6 pm - I usually try to snag a long table with the comfy leather seats but that's not always possible! - Look for the small Asian girl with an open Macbook and a folded Shut Up & Write sign! SAFETY & COMMUNITY: This Meetup Group is to meet other like-minded writers, write in good company, learn from each other, socialize, network and is to be a fun and SAFE environment. I will NOT hesitate to ban & report you to meetup.com AND report you to local authorities for unwanted attention or any harassment to others! No Soliciting. Please come with the best intentions and do not use our group as an audience to sell your latest and greatest product/idea/service/invention. We certainly support each other & participate in each other's ventures/projects/fundraisers but we're not a platform to be sold on anything. Writing Tool Discounts: http://genericdreams.com/shut-up-and-write-honolulu/ Live Aloha and Practice Pono! - Amy
