The Flattop Mountain Sunnyside Trail begins with a series of steep switchbacks that can feel challenging early on, but the reward comes quickly—each turn opens up broader views of Turnagain Arm, the Chugach foothills, and the surrounding valleys. Taking your time on this initial climb is well worth it, and packing water, snacks, and sunscreen will make the ascent far more comfortable.

Trail conditions can vary dramatically. Expect everything from muddy sections and slick roots to rain, wind, or lingering patches of snow at higher elevations. Because of this variability, carrying microspikes or other traction aids is advised.

Parking at the trailhead is limited, so carpooling is recommended when possible. Coordinating rides not only eases congestion but also helps ensure everyone has a spot before the lot fills. Once on the trail, however, the Sunnyside route offers a quieter and more spacious experience than the main Flattop approach—making the preparation well worth it.
