Nancy Lake Canoe Trip

Join the Sierra Club Alaska Chapter for a summer paddle through the beautiful waterways of the Nancy Lake State Recreation Area. We will be tackling a fantastic section of the Lynx Lake Loop canoe trail, launching from the Tanaina Lake canoe trail trailhead, paddling through a chain of pristine backcountry lakes to Ardaw Lake, and returning along the same route.
At our turnaround point on Ardaw Lake, we will break for a scenic lakeside picnic. This is a brilliant opportunity to experience the quiet interior wetlands, spot local waterfowl, and enjoy a day of active conservation community building.

### The Route & Challenge

This is a rewarding but physically demanding trip. We will be out on the water and trail for up to 6 hours.

• Portages: This route features multiple portages between the lakes. Participants must be capable of helping carry canoes and all personal gear over forested trails between launch points. Portages vary in length, and footing can occasionally be muddy or uneven.

### Gear & Watercraft

• Provided: Canoes, paddles, and life jackets / Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) will be provided for participants
• Bring Your Own: If you have your own canoe, kayak, or paddleboard, please let us know at alaska.chapter@sierraclub.org and feel free to bring it! Packrafts are welcome too, though keep in mind they can be challenging to paddle efficiently across extended stretches of flat water.
• Food: A packed lunch/picnic will be provided at the turnaround point at Ardaw Lake, plus high-energy snacks for the paddles.

### What to Bring

Please come prepared for a full day in the Alaska backcountry. We highly recommend bringing:

• Hydration: Plenty of water for an 6-hour excursion.
• Protection: Bug spray (the mosquitoes can be fierce) Bear spray, and sun screen.
• Layers: Weather in the recreation area can change quickly. Bring synthetic layers, a rain jacket, and footwear that you don’t mind getting wet during launches and portages.
• Cameras and Binoculars: To view beavers, waterfowl, and birds from safe distances

### Logistics & Carpooling

To minimize our environmental footprint and ease parking at the trailhead, carpooling from Anchorage is highly encouraged. Closer to the event, we will help arrange carpooling and a caravan from Anchorage for registrants

• RSVP Required: Space is limited by the number of watercraft. Please register in advance to secure your spot and to coordinate carpool logistics.
• Bring your own: If you do plan to bring your own paddle craft, please please let us know at alaska.chapter@sierraclub.org and we will open up additional space
• Space is limited: If you are unable to attend, please let us know at alaska.chapter@sierraclub.org so we can open your spot back up.
