Algiers is the 2nd oldest neighborhood in NO and the only neighborhood on the West Bank. It was developed as a plantation in 1719 and then into its own town. It was annexed into NO in 1870 and although there has been repeated discussions of succession, it has remained a part of the city ever since. It has been the home for many jazz musicians over the years and offers a quiet reprieve from the hustle and bustle of downtown NO. This neighborhood offers wonderful views of the city while also exuding its own quaint charm. We will take the time to notice all the amazing details of nature that exist within it. There will be a particular emphasis on noticing how nature transitions from day to night. We will all learn together about the flowers, trees, plants, lizards and birds that live in the area.
A little bit about me and what I do: I am a great appreciator of nature and animals. I moved to the city in 2017 and have spent this time exploring and falling in love with the city. I love noticing the details of nature, especially within urban settings. There is so much beauty that exists all around us; noticing and appreciating that beauty makes the walks so much more enjoyable. I love sharing the details with others!
Everyone is encouraged to bring binoculars, water, a hat, comfortable walking shoes and maybe even a fan. Everyone is also encouraged to download the Merlin Bird App and Seek by INaturalist beforehand to facilitate learning about what we see. Tips appreciated.
I will also have membership applications for anyone interested in joining the New Orleans Group of the Sierra Club. And for lagniappe will offer a 50% discount to anyone who joins!
