Bee Talk: What’s happening in the world of honey bees - a brief history of the western honey bee
**Doors open at 6:30pm. Program starts at 7pm**
Why are honeybees (and most other insects) threatened and disappearing? We’ll take a holistic approach to beekeeping. In other words... BEE TALK! **Our speaker will likely bring an observation hive.**
Our speaker will be Jay Martin (known in some circles as the “Legendary Uptown Beekeeper”).
“As a teenager, I was introduced by my best friend into the bee world in the late 60’s. At LSU I took a beekeeping class taught by the researchers from the nearby USDS-ARS Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics & Physiology Laboratory in the late 70’s. They asked if any students wanted a part-time job and a few raised their hands. I worked with an experienced beekeeper trying not to look too confused. At the end of the semester, they said I could continue to work there as long as I was attending classes.
I got my first hive in 1981 and immediately realized I didn’t know much about honey bees. My hobby slowly led me to a successful career mostly of producing raw honey. Recently retired. Now a hobbyist, once again helping beekeepers and doing educational things.”
