This challenging but rewarding hike will take us through spruce and hardwood forests, along mountain streams, past waterfalls, and up a famed rock formations to great views. It involves two stream fords. It includes some lesser-visited areas of Dolly Sods as well as an area that sometimes draws crowds. There are some steep grades, though mainly on former logging roads and railroad grades with reasonable footing. The climb up and the descent of Lion’s Head involves a rocky scramble, which is optional.
Bring: Plenty of water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellant. Hiking poles and an extra pair of shoes for the fords are recommended.
Cancellation: We will cancel if heavy storms are likely. In case of high water we may change to an alternate hike in or hear the Dolly Sods. - Bike Ride: Allegheny Highlands Trails, Hendricks, WVAllegheny Highlands Trail parking lot, Hendricks, WV

20-mile, moderate bicycle ride on paved rail-trail.
The Allegheny Highlands Trail offers 31 miles of non-motorized recreation with exceptional scenery, from small towns and rural farmland to wooded forests and sweeping riverside vistas. We will ride out-and-back from one end of the trail at Hendricks. Most or all of our route will be paved and nearly flat—along Black Fork and Shavers Fork. A ride highlight will be the Western Maryland Railroad Bridge and Depot in Parsons. Along the way, we’ll stop for a picnic and discuss the trail’s relationship to the controversies of Corridor H. There is no charge for this event, but donations are welcome.
Bring a bicycle (road, gravel, or mountain bikes all acceptable), a helmet (required), water, and lunch.
We will carry on in light rain but cancel in storms.
