Day Hike: Dolly Sods, Dunkenbarger Loop

Click the event on the calendar date to be taken to the form.*This hike is open to all who are capable of completing a 9 mile hike in wilderness conditions. This challenging but rewarding hike will take us through spruce and hardwood forests, along mountain streams, past waterfalls, and up a famed rock formations to great views. It involves two stream fords. It includes some lesser-visited areas of Dolly Sods as well as an area that sometimes draws crowds. There are some steep grades, though mainly on former logging roads and railroad grades with reasonable footing. The climb up and the descent of Lion’s Head involves a rocky scramble, which is optional.
Bring: Plenty of water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellant. Hiking poles and an extra pair of shoes for the fords are recommended.
Cancellation: We will cancel if heavy storms are likely. In case of high water we may change to an alternate hike in or hear the Dolly Sods.
