The Department of Recreation & Parks and Councilmember David Ryu are sponsoring a meeting at which the proposed new traffic and parking plan for the park will be presented; they say that questions will be addressed and comments heard. Come hear about the plan and voice your opinion!

The proposed plan was presented at the last Griffith Park Advisory Board meeting. The plan mostly focuses on traffic and parking near the Observatory; in the future it may be expanded to more of the park. Some highlights of the proposal, as I understood it:

• Most traffic to the Observatory would be replaced by free or low-cost shuttles, which would take people from free parking lots near the edges of the park (and in other areas of the park), including lots near the Greek Theater, at Fern Dell (the "Section 9" lot), lots near the Pony Rides, and possibly the Zoo lots. (They're also considering expanding DASH Service and maybe using some lots in Hollywood.)

• Starting in late morning, it would cost to park at the Observatory and on Western Canyon Road. The parking fees are supposed to discourage traffic and help cover the cost of the shuttles.

• There would also be free or low cost shuttles to the so-called "Hollywood Sign Viewing Area," an area around a quarter of a mile up Mt. Hollywood Drive (which is closed to private vehicles). (The Sierra Club Griffith Park Section and Angeles Chapter are on record opposing the opening of Mt. Hollywood Drive to either private vehicles or shuttles.)

• Western Canyon Road would be one-way for private vehicles, which could exit the park at Fern Dell. Only shuttles, bicycles, and official vehicles would be able to enter the park on Western Canyon. Traffic would also be one-way (counter-clockwise) around the Observatory loop and through the tunnel, which would be reconfigured to be more friendly to pedestrians and bicyclists. Traffic between the tunnel and the Greek would still be two-way.

The draft proposal will officially be published on Thursday, Jan 21, after which written public comments will be accepted for 6 weeks; there may also be another public meeting.
