What we’re about

Sierra Club is a national organization dedicated to explore, enjoy and protect the planet. This group is for anyone looking for outdoor activities, environmental programs and education and ways to make our community greener! Virtually all are FREE and open to everyone - you do not need to be a Sierra Club member to participate.

The Sierra Club groups of the Greater Tampa Bay Florida area includes the Suncoast Sierra Club group (serving Pinellas and Western Pasco & Western Hernando Counties) and the Tampa Bay Sierra Club (serving Hillsborough and Eastern Pasco & Eastern Hernando Counties) as well as our Tampa Bay ICO, Inspiring Connections Outdoors via Youth Outings for Pinellas and Hillsborough. With several thousand members, our local groups organize and participates in outdoor adventures, environmental education and public awareness, youth outings, environmental activism and lobbying of our local and state government for pro-environmental legislation.

Conservation topic - WATER and LAND
We will hike wilderness trails to the Morris Bridge sinkhole destined to augment the Hillsborough River.
Enjoy nature and search for wildlife. I've seen deer, tortoise, multiple species of birds and snakes.

Total distance is slightly over 5 miles. Most of the trail is shaded.

Free event but county parking fee is $2.00 per vehicle. Up to 8 people per vehicle.

Water or electrolyte drink (1 quart minimum preferably 2), hat, bug repellent just in case. Optional: raincoat, umbrella, snack, and personal items deem necessary.

There is no restroom or water available at the starting point. We may encounter bikers along the way.

This month, our guest presenter is Suncoast Sierra Club’s Chair, Bryan Beckman! Bryan will be sharing a presentation on how each of us can take action to lower our energy consumption and our bills, help reduce pollution, and leverage the latest technology and incentives.

We will also provide updates on local municipalities and reports from our various committees as well as sharing upcoming events.

We have many opportunities to get involved! Find out how you can help keep Pinellas green spaces green, keep our water and air clean, transition our area to clean energy, meet with and advocate for environmentally-aware elected officials, and create a better climate for all!

About Bryan Beckman
Bryan is currently serving as Chair of the Suncoast Sierra Executive Committee. In that role, Bryan is able to represent the Sierra Club in our community, with elected officials, and municipal employees. Prior to being the Chair, Bryan led various Ready for 100 % clean energy campaigns across Pinellas. He still puts a lot of focus in this area to help municipalities, churches, non-profits, and residents realize energy savings and pollution reduction goals.

Bryan is also very passionate in helping organizations that help others, including local churches, NAACP, League of Women Voters, and neighborhood organizations.

Brooksville Women's Club, Brooksville, FL
Steve Noll will chronicle the history of the ill-fated Cross Florida Barge Canal and the struggle to remove Rodman Dam from the Ocklawaha River. He is an instructional lecturer in the University of Florida's history department, where he received his PhD in 1991.
Dr. Noll taught special education in public schools for twenty-eight years before moving to UF in 2004. He has written on general Florida history as well as more specialized subjects ranging from Florida environmental policy, the Cross Florida Barge Canal, and the 1970s disability rights movement. In 2013, the Princeton Review named him one of the 300 best professors in the United States.
