Book Description
A practical guide to ecologically informed shoreline management in Florida: “Living shorelines” are a
proven, nature-based approach to coastal management that stabilize shorelines, reduce erosion, and
improve resilience while enhancing coastal ecosystems. This book introduces the concept of living
shorelines and explains how to plan and implement them in Florida—a state with the nation’s longest
contiguous coastline and intense development pressure. Living Shorelines for Florida serves
homeowners, professionals, and decision-makers by offering clear guidance on understanding
coastal systems and designing, permitting, building, and maintaining effective shoreline projects. With
step-by-step advice, real-world examples, recommended plants and materials, and illustrative
graphics, the book presents cost-effective, climate-resilient alternatives to traditional hardened
structures such as seawalls for managing Florida’s vulnerable waterfronts.
