The Reno City Council just posted their agenda for the upcoming meeting on Wednesday 4/22 starting at 10am. Item C.1 on the agenda includes a discussion on data centers and the possibility of a text amendment to the Development Code to modify the requirements for data center uses. This is our opportunity to show up and pressure the City Council to support a moratorium on incoming data centers until regulations can be adopted. We deserve protections from the adverse impacts that data centers can have on the environment and the people who live near them.
Please show up and give public comment in support of a moratorium until common sense guardrails are adopted. If you can't make it, you can also submit a written comment to [publiccomment@reno.gov](mailto:publiccomment@reno.gov) for this specific agenda item. Some of the regulations that we are advocating for include:

  • Require and/or incentivize data centers to develop and use new sources of clean energy and to use water efficient and energy efficient technologies.
  • Ensure that necessary environmental, health, and safety measures are in place, including noise, fire, water, and air quality rules.
  • Require best available generator technology to minimize air pollution from backup generators (e.g. Tier 4 generators, or lithium batteries)
  • Municipalities must require data centers to pay for necessary infrastructure/services.
  • Impose impact fees and community benefit agreements.
  • Require that data centers be built in appropriate locations.
  • Require good wages and union labor when data centers are built.
  • Require transparency, including the reporting of energy and water use.

I hope you can join us in calling for these protections. Please spread the word and call on your friends and neighbors to join us.
