Hike the winding Little River trail in Belfast

Details

This is a beautiful little hike of approximately 4 miles round trip, about 2.5 hours long. It's relatively easy and pretty and fun. It is one of my favorite hikes in the MidCoast area.

It does not have the big bang payoff that, say, Bald Mountain does, but it is a refreshingly natural hike with a remote feeling, though close to Belfast. The trail is festooned with mosses and carpets of pine needles all winding through a shady forest canopy. We'll traverse frequent mild slopes that are not long. We will watch out for roots along the way. It's always a good idea to bring hiking poles or a walking stick
We follow the edge of the upper and lower Belfast reservoir just north of Northport, then a length of the Little River as it bubbles over rocks. Bring a drink, snacks and hiking shoes for this one. Arrive at 8:30 am and we will begin the hike at 8:45.
Coming from the north on Route 1, the landmark is Little River Church (it's white with a steeple) on the right. Continue about a quarter mile to the Belfast Reservoir entrance on the right. If you come from the south, if you see the Little River Church on the left, you've gone a little too far.
When you pull in the parking area by the Belfast reservoir buildings, drive all the way the end (500 feet or so), that's where we park. There are no restrooms for this hike.

Attendees must sign a Sierra waiver at the trailhead to join this hike.

Although I would rate this hike as easy, attendees should be in good physical condition. Be considerate of the other hikers. If you are not feeling at the top of your game, do not sign up for this hike. Covid is not finished with us yet.
