We'll walk the beautiful Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve in the Theodore Roosevelt area of Jacksonville. Experience a few miles of peaceful, wooded nature trails, vast grasslands supporting water and land animals, a wonderful conservation story, and ancient piles of oyster shells revealing clues about an extinct culture.
This will be about a two hour hike of three miles. Some of the hiking will be up steep inclines and on uneven trails. Trekking poles may help.
Bring water and bug spray. No pets.

After our hike, we can have a picnic lunch and go over to the Visitor Center to see the exhibits and see a replica of the historic Ft. Caroline.
The Spanish Pond Trail entrance is just past 13165 Mount Pleasant Rd., one mile southeast of Fort Caroline National Memorial.
DIRECTIONS:
Across from the entrance to Ft. Caroline, 12713 Fort Caroline Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32225
From I-295 East Beltway: Take the Monument Rd exit 47. Keep right at the exit ramp, follow signs for Timucuan Preserve/Fort Caroline/Naval Station Mayport. Continue on Monument Rd. 4.6 miles to Fort Caroline Rd. Turn right on Ft. Caroline Rd, and go .6 miles. The Spanish Pond lot is on the right across from the entrance to Ft. Caroline on the left.
Cancellation Policy: Event will be held rain or shine but may be cancelled if weather threatens safety such as in the case of lightning or high winds in the forecast. Also, if the heat index is forecast to be over 103, then the outing will be cancelled.
Participants are advised to check Meetup for current status before traveling to the event. Events may need to be cancelled at short notice.
* Help the environment by following these tips: Bring your water in a reusable container instead of a single-use plastic bottle. Use sunscreen free oxybenzone and oxtinoxate. These chemicals are extremely harmful to coral reefs, as well as being hormone disruptors in humans.
Sierra Club maintains a safe space agreement between participants, leaders, volunteers, and staff. They want to support everyone and exploring, enjoying, and protecting our natural environment, and hateful and dangerous behavior will not be tolerated. We don't want to deny participation in these outdoor programs, and we will always say no to racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, impairment, and disruption. We request that all participants cooperate with the outings leaders direction to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone.
