Join us for a leisurely hike within the outlaying grounds of the Fort Stanton Historic Site in Lincoln County, famous for Smokey the Bear and Billy the Kid country. Surrounded by the Snowy River NCA, we'll discuss the cave system and it's background. There is over 73 miles of sustainable horseback, mountain biking and hiking trails that wind through open meadows of juniper and pinon and arroyos and subtle canyons. There will be great views of the Sacramento, Capitan and Vera Cruz mountains within the Lincoln National Forest. We'll also discuss the lengthy historic background of this intact frontier fort. The trail length is approximately 2.5 - 3 miles with side stops and off trail that is looped with a minimal elevation gain of 100' or so. The event is free, but there is a $7 admission fee if you choose to go into the visitor's center museum. You'll also have the opportunity to explore the grounds and buildings on your own if you desire once the hike has ended. Limit to 8 people and no dogs. Deadline for registering is June 26
