With Delafield DuBois, Retired Archeologist & BLM Park Ranger

The Rio Grande is the big feature of the Taos Plateau. There are also many Volcanoes and an adjacent wilderness area with a inadequately- appreciated Rio San Antonio. There's paved road access to many hiking and camping opportunities. There are also classic NM dirt roads, old trails, new trails, and off-trail opportunities for exploration and hiking.

Del is an Archeologist by training, and an explorer both personally and professionally. His career has exclusively focused on the northern part of our state, ranging from grant-funded palaeoclimatological study, to trail design and construction. Given the stunning visual impacts the area has to offer, he jumped on the opportunity to work with New Mexico Tech geologists to study the water table and the biggest spring in the state.
With 30 years of search and rescue experience, Del will offer a diverse menu of opportunities that will be tempered by the caution necessary for exploration of an area that has been enjoyed by millennia of explorers.

Location: The Travel Bug is where Del's talk will happen. Meet at 4:30 for free beer (or beverage of your choice), with the talk starting at 5pm sharp, on Saturday, September 27.

Separate event:
The following day (Sunday September 28) there will be a hike to Cerro de la Olla (Pot Mountain) on the west side of the Monument. It's a 2 1/2 hour drive from Santa Fe, 5 mile round trip to the summit, with 1,340 feet of elevation gain. Given the last hour of access is dirt road, if it is too muddy, the hike will occur on the following Saturday October 4. Alan Shapiro will be joined by Del and John Buchser to lead that expedition. Given the long driving time, it will be a long day. Sign up to attend this hike here.
