What we’re about
Welcome to Sierra Club's Toiyabe Chapter - Southern Nevada Group Meetup Page. Sierra Club is the region's largest and most powerful volunteer, grassroots conservation organization. Check our calendar to see our opportunities to take action, get involved, or just join us for a hike.
We invite you to join us in protecting our public lands, wildlife refuges, forests, parks and wilderness for all. We welcome your donations to support our important local work. Thank you for all that you do to explore enjoy and protect Nevada and our public lands.
From our base in Las Vegas, the Southern Nevada Group is proud to serve Sierra Club members and friends throughout the lower portion of the state, including residents of Clark, Nye, Esmeralda, Lincoln and White Pine counties. Our certified Outings leaders provide opportunities to explore the region’s natural bounty, with frequent hikes scheduled along the trails of Red Rock Canyon NCA, Lake Mead NRA, Valley of Fire State Park, Humbolt-Toiyabe National Forest and other areas of scenic beauty and wilderness.
We have quarterly mixers, environmental education programs, tabling events and cause-related political activities are regular features of our annual calendar.

PLEASE NOTE: We are not accepting sign-ups for this event online. We are using Meetup as a way of announcing the event, but you must sign up by emailing the Outing Leader. If you wish to attend, please email Anne Henry at
anneth16@sbcglobal.net.*From Friends of Basin and Range National Monument: “BioBlitz is an event that brings together scientists, naturalists, and enthusiasts to inventory and observe the biodiversity of selected areas in Basin and Range National Monument over a short period of time. Our BioBlitzes have enhanced our understanding of the monument's ecosystem and provided an opportunity for collaboration among different stakeholders.”
The CA/NV Wilderness Committee of the Sierra Club will join a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Bioblitz* in Nevada’s remote Basin & Range National Monument over the weekend of June 7 and 8, in celebration of the Monument’s 10th anniversary. It will be our third joint project with Monument staff and other volunteers. We anticipate camping in the Mt. Irish area, potentially in a developed campground--details are still TBD from BLM. Participants should plan to arrive Friday afternoon June 6 and depart Monday morning June 9. Vicky’s optional central commissary will be available ($20/person) for three dinners (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and three breakfasts (Saturday, Sunday, Monday).
Group leaders and volunteers will gather at Mt. Irish on the morning of June 7 & June 8 (exact times TBD). Volunteers will split up with group leaders and then go inventory different types of plants & animals in the southern part of Basin and Range National Monument on both days. Camping will be at Mt. Irish. This is a remote area with limited facilities and those participating in this event should be in good physical shape and be willing and able to walk fairly long distances over varied terrain. The campsite may be fairly primitive; the leader will let you know details when you sign up. Transportation to the site will be on your own.
We will inventory habitats ranging from blackbrush communities to ponderosa trees in the high elevations of Mt. Irish. Group leaders will be specialists in reptiles, plants, bats, small mammals, and birds. We use iNaturalist to record observations. If you want to get familiar with iNaturalist ahead of time, that is a great idea.
