Hike Down to Lake Mead near Callville Bay, Monday, February 9

This is a special hike where we hike down to Lake Mead and have lunch by the lake instead of in the desert or mountains, which we also love. It's from the Callville Bay parking lot down to the lake. If the weather is good it is so beautiful, with the shimmering lake as our destination. It is a moderately strenuous hike of about 1.5 miles in and 1.5 miles out. It is difficult to estimate the elevation loss and gain, since the trail includes up and down on a few steep slopes. But say about 500 ft or so. The terrain is volcanic - black volcanic rock. We will also encounter nicely rounded gravels way above the highest water level in the lake. This is interpreted as the remains of an ancient tributary to the Colorado River.

Leaders are Nick Saines and Diana Baker. We are meeting at 10:00 AM in the parking lot in Callville Bay. Take your first right hand turn on Callville Bay Road when you reach the parking lot. Or you can meet us at the north end of the Walmart parking lot in Henderson at 9:15 AM. (Heading east on Lake Mead Parkway, just after crossing Boulder Highway, turn right at the light on Taylor Street and we are meeting in the Walmart parking lot behind the Chase Bank.) It is suggested that passengers pay the drivers $5.00. For those who live north and use I-11 you may want to take it to I-15 north and then take Lake Mead Blvd east (contact Nick at greatunc@aol.com for map). Bring food for lunch, water, and your hiking gear. Trip limited to 15, including the two leaders. Leave a message here on he Meetup and e
mail Nick (greatunc@aol.com) to let him know if we will meet you in the parking lot at Callville Bay, or at the Walmart parking lot in Henderson.
