Geology Hike on West Side of White Rock Loop in Red Rock Canyon
Details
This is a slow-paced hike on the west side of the White Rock Loop where we will encounter great scenery and interesting geology, along a good trail. We will hike about 2.0 miles to the overlook near the Triassic Shinarump Conglomerate outcrop, have a bite, and then head back. The geology reveals how solid rock can be bent and pushed up almost vertical, and even overturned. (See pages 121-124 in my book on the geology of Red Rock, "Geological Treasures of Red Rock Canyon..." available at Boca Park REI and on Amazon.)
This hike is in the Rainbow Mountain Wilderness. It is about 4.0 miles total and about 600 feet of elevation gain. We will meet at the end of the pavement at the Willow Springs picnic area in Red Rock, stepping off at 0830. So get through the fee booth before 0800. Bring your senior pass or pay $20/car.
