A Hike Through Phleger Estates
Details
➤ Hike Description: Moderate – 8.3 miles, 1,050 ft elevation gain, barbell-style double-loop hike. Leisurely to moderate (approximately 2-2.5 mph with breaks) Well maintained fire roads and single-track trails; some uneven terrain.
Join us for a peaceful 8.3-mile exploration of Phleger Estate, a quiet hidden gem within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. With visitor numbers still low, you may feel as though you have the recovering second-growth redwood forest all to yourself.
The route winds through sun-dappled groves, lush fern understory, and open meadows. Listen for birdsong, the rustle of leaves, and the occasional tap of woodpeckers. Watch for deer grazing in the clearings and squirrels darting among the trees. Along the way we will share stories of the estate’s rich history as a private retreat and discuss the importance of preserving these vital ecosystems.
➤ Important Note: This is an independent hike organized by experienced leaders, not an official Sierra Club outing. All participants are responsible for their own safety and should ensure they have appropriate fitness levels for this moderate 8.3-mile hike.
➤ Post-Hike Potluck: Join us for a relaxed potluck lunch at the picnic area adjoining the parking lot. We'll provide pizza, succulent smoked salmon, warm garlic bread from the barbecue, and refreshing drinks. This is a wonderful opportunity to share trail stories, discuss what we observed, and connect with fellow nature enthusiasts. Salads, desserts, or side dishes are especially welcome if you'd like to contribute. Bring a sit-upon or camp chair for comfortable seating.
