Details

Join us on Sunday, November 20th, for a nearby, leisurely, and educational outing at one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the country: the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.

We’ll take a 3.6 mile stroll and along the way we’ll learn about the refuge system, the Arsenal’s history, and its wildlife. We’ll also talk about the importance of prairie ecosystems, their keystone species, and an ongoing effort to restore a keystone predator to Colorado.

The Sierra Club aspires for inclusiveness in its outings and the refuge is an excellent candidate for all ages and abilities: it is close to town and its trails rather flat at a familiar elevation.

If you would like to arrange a carpool to the refuge please contact Chris at [masked] or[masked].

When: Sunday, November 20th from 1 - 4:30pm
Where: Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (Map (https://goo.gl/maps/vgmDXj9294x)): At the visitor’s center and out-and-back to the Rod and Gun Club Ponds via the Prairie and Rod and Gun Club trails, a total of 3.6 miles (Information and Trail Map (https://www.fws.gov/uploadedFiles/trail%20wildlife%20drive%20map%20with%20text(1).pdf)).

Agenda

1:00 - Gather at the visitor center by the bison display; introduction
1:30 - Carpool to the Prairie Trail parking area and begin our walk
4:30 - Wrap-up just before sunset

I encourage you to arrive earlier to peruse the visitor center’s wealth of information, drop into the gift shop, and/or drive the 11-mile Wildlife Drive (which was recently extended by 7 miles on October 15th!).
