BIRD BANDING & HIKE: Attend a migratory bird banding -- we can hold a wild bird after the experts band it -- and hike ROUGHLY 6 MILES AT A MODERATE PACE around the refuge. We'll spend about an hour at the bird banding station and then we'll hike along the refuge's flat trails, stopping occasionally for eagles, warblers, indigo buntings, ospreys or other cool critters.
YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER AND DO THE FOLLOWING:
-
Since this is strictly limited to 14 adult hikers, you are not confirmed until you receive a reply from the hike leader after emailing her at Barb22030 AT yahoo DOT com & registering on the Sierra Club's Meetup site.
-
A $2 per person entry fee is required (or a National Parks Pass) in addition to the voluntary $2 donation fee to the Sierra Club. Please bring $4 cash.
-
MEET AT 7:30 A.M. AT VRE's outdoor drop-off spot (next to the the indoor parking garage) -- NOT at the refuge. IGNORE MEETUP'S MAP GLITCHES. The address is 1040 Express Dr, Woodbridge, VA and the GPS coordinates are: 38.659118, -77.248124 . From there we will drive together to the refuge.
(VRE does not operate on weekends, so hikers can message each other to arrange carpools.)

PLEASE NOTE: Rain cancels banding but NOT hike -- unless there is lightning. You can attend a bird banding on your own four days a week from the end of March to the end of May. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Occoquan_Bay/visit/plan_your_visit.html
