Turkey Run/Dead Run Loop, McLean, VA
Details
We will be hiking on Halloween, but with Thanksgiving in mind on this “Dead Turkey” loop hike which follows Turkey Run and Dead Run trails, and a portion of the Potomac Heritage Trail. This 3.1-mile hike with 361 ft elevation gain on the Virginia side of the Potomac River packs in a lot of variety in a relatively short distance. We will take our time to appreciate our surroundings, at a pace of about 1.5 mph, with a snack break at the waterfalls at Dead Run. We will see and experience waterfalls, stream crossings, open meadow, rock scrambles, Potomac views, and a few places with ropes to facilitate short steep sections of the trail. The woods here have many magnificent old trees including beech, sycamores, and tulip trees. At this time of year there should be some beautiful foliage remaining on the trees, and ferns and some remaining wildflowers on the forest floor. At other times of year there are bluebells galore and many other flowers, pawpaws, and berries. It is beautiful in all seasons! The stream crossings are generally passable without getting your feet wet, but may be trickier if water levels are high. We will cancel/postpone in case of rain, and reassess the route if there has been significant rain in previous days.
MEETING PLACE: We will meet at parking lot C-1 in Turkey Run Park, which is just off of the George Washigton Parkway. There is a Turkey Run Park exit off the Parkway. The C-1 parking lot was previously closed due to construction along the GW Parkway, but it has re-opened. Parking lot Coordinates: 38°57'51.6"N 77°09'10.9"W There is no public transportation available. Participants may arrange carpools on their own using Meetup message.
