# Fort Stevens is the site of the only Civil War battle fought in the District of Columbia. Here on July 11 and 12, 1864, Union soldiers, with the support of their comrades at nearby forts, stopped a Confederate invasion of Washington. It was here that President Abraham Lincoln was shot at by Confederate soldiers while observing the battle from the fort’s parapet wall.

# Meet 8:00 am, Saturday, July 13, 2024, in Fort Reno Park at 40th and Chesapeake streets NW. See site of Fort Reno, earthworks at Fort DeRussy, the battlefield, and Battleground National Cemetery, where forty-one of the city’s defenders are buried. End hike at Fort Stevens by 10:30 am. Distance is approximately 5 miles.

# Fort Reno Park is .3 miles from the Tenleytown-AU Metro Station on the Red Line. At Fort Stevens, there is frequent bus service along Georgia Avenue to Silver Spring, nearby metro stations, and downtown Washington.
