Hike Virginia's Fountainhead

Details
This 6-mile hike has 1000 feet of ascents over gently rolling terrain by Occoquan Reservoir in Virginia. Fountainhead Park is popular, but some of our trails are in a section that's poorly blazed and maintained. Along those paths, we will see how overgrowth, erosion, blowdowns, and low traffic have "re-wilded" things. We'll wind through woodlands and ravines to the reservoir shore, passing a couple long-abandoned vehicles and vestiges of a water control project.
This is another in the series of hikes pursuant to the leaders' work on a new edition of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club's guidebook on select trails in Northern Virginia. The leaders will recount the park's recent history, connections to other trails in the area, and how field work on guidebooks is done. A few updated maps will be available for the earliest arrivers.
Park entry is free. Participants will be asked for a modest, voluntary donation ($2 or so) to cover the Sierra Club's website, first aid training, and other costs. Everyone on the hike, including the leaders, is required to sign the Club's participation agreement, acknowledging various risks and requiring reasonable behavior.
REGISTRATION OPENS ON JUNE 17.
