Battle of Fort Stevens Commemoration Hike - Fort Reno to Fort Stevens – DC

Hike a portion of the north line of the Civil War Defenses of Washington. Complete hike in time to participate in Fort Stevens Day activities.
Fort Stevens is the site of the only Civil War battle fought in the District of Columbia. Here on July 11 and 12, 1864, Union soldiers, with the support of comrades at nearby forts, stopped a Confederate invasion of Washington. It was here that President Abraham Lincoln was shot at by Confederate soldiers while observing the battle from the fort’s parapet wall.
See site of Fort Reno, the earthworks at Fort DeRussy, the battlefield, and Battleground National Cemetery, where forty-one of the city’s defenders are buried. Hike will end at Fort Stevens. Distance is approximately 5 miles.
Each participant must sign a liability waiver at the trailhead. Wear trail shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring snacks and water.
