Nature Walk: “In Search of Butterflies & Bees” at Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge

Details
We’re taking advantage of the decent weather forecast for this date. The walk is limited to 10 people and will be a 2-2.5-mile easy-paced land-side exploration of a small portion of the Refuge at Fort Belvoir. Trails are a combination of paved and natural surfaces with minor elevation changes. Our prime targets are butterflies and bees (whose numbers seem to be dwindling), but we expect to see other fauna and flora. For us 2-legged mammals, long trousers are recommended to guard against ticks. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellant and camera are also recommended. Bring along some water or non-alcoholic beverage. No pets or guests please. Toilet facilities are only available at the trailhead. Meet 9:00 AM at the Visitor Center parking lot just outside Fort Belvoir’s Tulley Gate. To get there, take Pohick Road south from US route 1 toward Tulley Gate. Stay in the right hand lane past Poe Road and a very small parking lot, then take a right into the Visitor Center parking lot. The address is 9500 Pohick Road, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060. If you find yourself at the security gate by mistake, ask the guard how to get to the Visitor Center. Everyone who attends must sign a liability waiver (available at the start). Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings (SCPRO) appreciates a voluntary donation of $2 per person to help maintain our all-volunteer program.
