Hike Blockhouse Point

Details

We'll hike about 5 miles over rolling terrain to visit the site of a Union blockhouse that guarded against Confederate raids across the Potomac River during the Civil War. We'll enjoy the view from an overlook and explore connections between Blockhouse Point Park, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal towpath, and Muddy Branch Greenway, which leads well north into Montgomery County, Maryland. Be ready for some 500 feet of ascent, some of it steep, and maybe some bushwhacking.

  • This hike is limited to 15 participants, and registration opens at 8AM Friday, September 5.
  • Well behaved dogs allowed so long as their owners are leashed. Dogs do not count as participants.
  • There is no entrance fee for the park. Participants will be asked for a modest contribution ($2 or so) to defray the Sierra Club's training, internet, and other costs.
  • All participants including the leader are required to sign a waiver/agreement on conduct for the outing.
  • Bring lunch or a snack and enough liquid to stay hydrated. Expect sunlight, bugs, thorny and itchy things.
  • Rain cancels this event.
