Come out and help on a Sierra Club PRO Service Trip at the Harpers Ferry Cross Trails Hostel in Knoxville, Maryland.
Located below the Blue Ridge Mountains at the junction of the legendary Potomac and Shenandoah rivers near the historic town of Harpers Ferry, the Cross Trails Hostel offers excellent accommodations, outstanding views, and serves as an important wayside for backpackers and cyclists traveling the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. First established as an American Youth Hostel in 1962, the Harpers Ferry Hostel served the traveling public for almost 60 years before closing because of the pandemic. Fortunately, in 2021 the hostel was reopened by a group of Appalachian Trail thru hikers and renamed Cross Trails. The goal now is to further upgrade the hostel with new campsites and trails, and improving the grounds for the enjoyment of the outdoor community. If you would like to help in the effort, please meet at 10:AM at the El Charro Restaurant Parking Lot on Keep Tryst Road off of U.S. 340. From here we will have a short shuttle to the hostel. Please bring comfortable work clothes, boots, work gloves, trail snacks. and water. Tools and lunch will be provided by the hostel. For anyone who wishes to stay over Saturday night at Cross Trails Hostel in order to visit the many attractions at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park or hike the C&O Canal on Sunday, there will be no cost for staying. at the hostel. Camping and bunk beds available.
Leaders: Glenn Gillis 571-217-4477 and Dave Torraca. Special Hostel Hosts: Brant Kindness and Parker Selby 240-778-9369.
