Leisurely Canal Walk in Historic Frederick MD

OVERVIEW Take a leisurely walk of under 2.5 miles in about 2.5 hours along the lovely paved canal path plus paved extension trail within historic Frederick, Maryland. We will head along the canal to Baker Park and, as our pace permits, the Schifferstadt historic house or a bit beyond.

The landscaped canal has plantings, murals, sculptures, lovely small bridges, historic properties, and parks along the way. We will be making stops for sharing, stretching, and engaging with the outdoors.

DETAILS Meet before 1:15 PM in front of our start and finish point: The Delaplaine Arts Center: 40 S Carroll St. Recommendation is to arrive at next-door very large parking garage by 1:00. Introductions are at 1:15 and we start walking at 1:30.

SIERRA ASKS No pets please. All participants must sign a liability waiver at the start. SCPRO requests a voluntary donation of $2 per person to help support our all-volunteer program. You need not be a Sierra Club member to participate, but if you'd like to join, go to: http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia.

PARKING Note, you will need to arrive by about 1:00 to have time to enter and get ticket at the low-cost parking garage--Car entrance: 125 East All Saints Street. Time is needed to find a spot on one of the levels, walk down the stairs to the pedestrian exit on S. Carroll Street, and find the Delaplaine Arts Center a few steps away-- see map below.

RESTROOMS Give yourself even more advanced time of arrival to use restrooms inside the free-admission Arts Center lower level, before we meet outside in front of the Center building at 1:15. Center Staff may ask you to sign their welcome record book.

WALK CONDITIONS The concrete path is wide and easy with some gentle inclines and declines. We will be crossing some two-lane town roads.

CANCELLATION Steady rain cancels event. We will add updates as needed.

PREPARATION:

• Sturdy comfortable footwear and layers of clothing
• Water!
• Snack if desired; lunch if desired
• Backpack
• Sunblock and sun hat
• Bug spray
