Discover DC Boundary Stones Along the Northeast Line (Maryland)

This is the 4th hike along the original boundary line between the nation’s capital, Virginia, and Maryland DC Boundary Stones: The 40 Markers of 1791. Stones were placed every mile along the boundary survey line---the Virginia stones were set in 1791 and the Maryland stones were set in 1792. The boundary stones were the first federal monuments in the nation’s capital; we plan to see 7 of them on this hike, as well as some historical sites connected with the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
The linear hike will be moderately paced along mostly sidewalks, with multiple undulations (ups & downs). We will meet outside the Silver Spring Metro Station at the corner of Colesville Road and East-West Highway/MD route 410, 9:00 am, Saturday, July 25, 2026. We plan to finish around Fort Lincoln Cemetery not later than 3PM. At the end of the hike, you'll have the opportunity to take public transportation (Metro Bus) to the nearest Metro Rail station that best works for you. Based on our 7/21 scouting, the total distance should be about 9 miles, which includes a leg to arrive at a Metro Bus stop.
Bring plenty of water, lunch or snacks, and dress for the weather. Sun protection (brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) recommended.
All participants must sign a liability waiver at the meeting place.
