Understanding the History of Virginia’s Forests, Grasslands, and Wildlife
Virginia has a wonderful and diverse legacy and heritage of forests, grasslands and associated wildlife that have evolved dramatically as the result of changes in climate and human action over the last several thousand years. Doug MacCleery’s presentation, “Understanding the History of Virginia’s Forests, Grasslands, and Wildlife: why that knowledge is relevant to today’s conservation efforts” will describe how these changes have created the natural legacy that surrounds us today and why that knowledge can better inform our conservation efforts today.
The presentation will start at 11:45 am in the Meeting House at the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria VA. Guests are welcome to come early for the coffee hour which starts at 11:00 am.
Doug MacCleery is retired from the US Forest Service and has written extensively on the history and evolving use and management of American forests and wildlife. His talk is premised on the idea that setting an effective course for our future requires a clear understanding of the how we got to where we are today. He will suggest opportunities for how people can get personally involved in conservation activities today.
