Carnivorous Pitcher Plants and more @ Suggs Millpond aka Horseshoe Lake
Details
This is an annual favorite in late spring, but I've been wondering what the pitcher plants look like this time of year. Suggs is infamous for their variety of carniverous Pitcher Plants in bloom and (if we can find it) a sand pit with animal bones.
It's a bit of a drive, but usually worth it! Please check back here on the morning of the event in case of cancellation. It's cooling down now, be sure to layer up as it'll only get mid 70s with a slight wind blowing. Finding ramp can be tricky to find, even with map apps!!! Please read the directions below carefully, PREVIEW THEM and even print them out.
NCWRC Suggs Cabin, 5275 Live Oak Methodist Church Road, White Oak, NC
From the entrance to Suggs Millpond Gamelands, follow the dirt road, eventually bearing right then left to follow the main road until you reach a maintenance depot. From there turn right and in a few hundred yards you will see an old house with parking lot and launch dock. Share parking spots if possible.
****If your GPS sends you on Turnbull Road, stop and backtrack to major intersection. Turnbull will NOT take you to the lake!
Last time we were there, cell reception was not good. We recommend that you download a map of the area beforehand in Google maps. If you don’t know how to do this, the Internet has some good instructions.
Please arrive no later than 10:45 and be ready to launch at 11:00.
There are no bathrooms here, just woods. Expect to paddle 5-8 miles. The lake is literally horseshoe shaped, and it’s easy to find your way back to the launch if you want to leave before others.
We can explore some tight passages through the cypress, and hopefully a visit to "the boneyard," which is our usual spot to stop for lunch and stretch legs.
We ALWAYS require you to wear a PFD, and have waterproof whistle (by law). No inflatables or very slow boats please. Please wear non-absorbing clothes (not cotton), and bring an emergency change in a drybag. Air is cool now, layer up.
Bring: H2O, SPF, PFD, lunch, etc.
Remember that with SK you always paddle at your own risk. We’re just a club for getting paddlers together, and are not responsible for your safety or convenience.
More fun, less drama!
