Deep River & Old Endor Furnace with Shuttle
Details
This section of Deep River is only 5.8 mi. but holds the interesting start @ Deep River Park with the Camelback Bridge and an old Confederate Iron Ore furnace circ. 1862-65 in the middle of it. Let's paddle steady to get to that area and get out to find the furnace before the ticks are out in force and we can't find it through the trees. We'll lunch at the river after that hike and then head down to the take out at 15-501 bridge. Shuttle only takes 10 min. tops, be prepared to help with shuttle please. Not much rain lately, so flow will be slow, but this section is always paddlable. I've allowed plenty of time, so depending on how quickly we find the furnace, we may take out earlier, but no promises.
Paddle: Drop boats at Deep River Park at 9:30a, do shuttle down to 15-501, drive back and paddles wet by 10a.
Water: area lake temps are still ranging high 50s, so wear what you know you need to stay warm when wet, layering to peel in the sun and have dry bag packed with change of clothes if you fall in. NO COTTON! This section is rated with class 1-ripples, but it'll be calm what with not much water coming down the river.
Weather: Predicted to be low 80s, sun and clouds, low chance rain, wind 5-10.
Gear: Approp. clothing, PFD and whistles a must, lunch, water, TICK SPRAY, paddle boots suggested for hiking to furnace.
Did I forget anything? Let me know! We will probably be getting out on rocks for the hike, this is a deep carved river, so you may not want to bring your fiberglass/composite boat to pull up on the rocks, I'll have my plastic Necky.
