TRIP IS CANCELLED!! Update below Tuesday Evening at Farrington Point, Jo
Details
2:35pm Just received National Weather Alert for a fast moving thunderstorm in the area with 60mph winds. The paddle is CANCELLED!
2:00pm Forecasts for the evening from various sources are still showing sporadic thunderstorms, maybe intense like yesterday’s. Whether the storms hit Jordan Lake area is questionable. Visually, Cumulonimbus cloud formations to the south of Carrboro are showing a shift from the clear blue sky today. Likely I will cancel the paddle, but for strong kayakers at heart, I’m willing to hold out until 4pm.
Tuesday 6:30 am: Forecasts for our paddle window of 6-8pm are predicting pop-up thunderstorms. I will continue to watch forecasts and will make the safest call by 2pm.
This will be a relaxing evening. Come paddle with others, relax, exercise, have fun getting to know new attendees as well as long timers. We will meet at the non-motorized boat launch at Farrington Point. Be ready to launch “paddles wet” at 6:00pm. Come prepared to get a little wet wearing summer paddling attire. To paddle with Simply Kayaking you are required to wear a Personal Flotation Device / PDF (life jacket) and carry on you a signaling device (whistle or horn).
This week we will paddle up and back on Bush Creek exploring side coves, if desired. Approximate time will be 1 1/2 to 2 hrs.
Sunset is at 8:30. We will conclude our paddle prior to sunset. If the evening is clear, paddlers may choose to stay on their own to watch.
Note: water levels are about 3ft below normal for Jordan Lake.
MANDATORY:
PFD and carry a signaling device (whistle / horn). You will not be able to paddle with this group, if you don’t have these.
Dusk and nighttime require at least a white light affixed to the bow. We hope to return before dusk, but safety comes first. Be prepared!
Head lamps can serve in emergencies.
No paddle boards, no inflatables, no collapsable boats, no inexpensive play kayaks.
RECOMMENDED:
Water, water, water, hat, sunglasses, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent.
