2017 August PM Zone Meetup: Nurturing our Youth in Servant Leadership

Details

We have over the years seen how the field of project management grew. Two decades ago, project managers were seen as authoritarian figures whose management skills were imparted to them by those before them through trial-and-error. With hindsight, the trial-and-error had often reaped much pain to stakeholders and all involved.

Fast forward to now, we are much luckier. With the advent of the internet, knowledge is not accepted without rigorous debate. Project management skills; tools and techniques; and methodologies do not go into the field's scriptures without critical analyses and discussions. And we are now more discerning that the field's "holy grails" at any one time may not be so at another as we constantly discover new frontiers.

Like in many fields, we discovered that project management is not exclusive in the business domain where the ultimate aim is to reap profit. Project management is essential too in humanitarian endeavours - to realise dreams and hopes, and to build a better future for all humankind.

Armed with many sophisticated ways of thinking and advancement in educating our youngs, the project-management fraternity can now start imparting the skill of project management to the young when these youngsters are exposed to project-based learning activities in class. As many of these activities are humanitarian-based, the kids and their trainers are able to contribute immediately something more meaningful to the less privileged section of the society who needed their contribution most.

This meetup section will give us a chance to come close to those who have been involved in PM4Youth in Singapore where they will share with us their experience in arming our youths with project management know-how as a 21st-century life skill for them to take the baton and venture into new frontiers we have not gone before for the betterment of humanity. In this meetup, we will celebrate these contributors' resilience and tenacity in the face of obstacles in order to achieve their higher purposes - so that the inclusiveness that they strive will ensure that no one no matter how underprivileged, is an island.
