The Paranormal and The Supernatural: What, Why and How?

Beliefs in spirits (good or evil), black magic, miracles, astrology, horoscopes, fortune-telling, forecasting the future, mind-reading, numerology, extra-sensory perception (ESP), and other paranormal and psychic phenomena are quite popular.

Some people say they have directly experienced such phenomena or know someone who supposedly has "psychic powers".

But what is the scientific evidence to support these phenomena that supposedly cannot be explained by the laws of nature (that is, "supernatural")?

Could they be a misinterpretation of natural phenomena or have some other "down to earth" explanation?

Why is the belief in such things popular even by people who have no experience in them?
