Hike to South Mountain in the Valle Caldera NP

South Mountain is located just inside the Main Entrance to the Valle Caldera located north of Jemez Springs, NM. From the new rangers station we'll follow an old logging road to as near the top as possible then, bushwack to the top. Hoping for some great views and maybe some wildlife. Last Saturday the 30th of August we saw two black bears just a little NW of the mountain. Total driving distance one way of about 78 miles. All on pavement except for the last 3 miles or so. Total hiking distance of around 8-9 miles round trip, with elevation gain of about 2500 feet. NO DOGS or WHINERS! West Mesa hikers are welcome if they have adult supervison. I would rate this event as STRENOUS due to elevation gain. Be prepared to reimburse your drivers at the rate of $.10 per mile round trip or about $15 for the day.
