I've never been to this area before, but it looked interesting so here we go. We'll meet at Smiths and carpool to the end of the road at Red Canyon Campground in the far southern part of the mountains. I plan on hiking on Trail #89 up to the Crest Trail #170, then north to Trail #189 and that should take us back to the vehicles. Total hiking distance of around 5-8 miles. Total elevation gain of something like 2000 feet. Total driving distance of 65 miles one way. Not sure what the roads will be like as I have never been there. Dress for normal New Mexico November weather and bring plenty of water and snacks for a moderate day of hiking. NO DOGS or WHINERS! I would rate this hike as MODERATE. Be prepared to reimburse your drivers at the rate of $.10 per mile or about $15 for the day. For more information, ask your questions below and I'll answer below.
