Petroglyph Hunt in El Malpais
Details
The El Malpais are full of petroglyphs, the problem is finding them. The area I hope to find some is just southeast of the Lobo Canyon Trailhead in Cebolla Canyon. There is a short line of cliffs on the east side of the road that are right across from a large cliff pueblo ruin. Looks like a decent spot to maybe find some drawings. After that we'll climb to the top of the mesa and head for the local high point before returning to the vehicles via a side canyon. Besides petroglyphs I also hope to find some pottery shards and maybe even some seldom seen ruins. Be prepared for a long day of walking and climbing. Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you going. I would rate this event as STRENOUS due to the elevation gain and walking along the bottom of the cliff face. Total driving distance of about 100 miles one way. In dry weather most any vehicle will make the trip. The last 3-4 miles will be on dirt roads. Total hiking distance of about 6-10 miles. Elevation gain of about 1000 feet. NO DOGS OR WHINERS! Be prepared to reimburse your drivers at the rate of $.10 per mile round trip or about $20 for the day. For more information, ask your questions below and I'll answer below. We will leave the Lowes parking lot promptly at 8AM. I will be stopping at Laguna Burger on the way home. Please feel free to join me.
