What Is a White Elephant Gift Exchange?
A White Elephant game is a fun alternative to Secret Santa. Instead of drawing a specific person and buying a gift for them, everyone brings one wrapped, unmarked gift to add to a shared gift pile.
Here’s how it works:
- Budget $25–$50 per gift. Gifts can be funny, useful, quirky, or desirable.
- Everyone brings one wrapped gift without putting any name on it.
- Everyone draws numbers to determine the order of play.
- Player #1 chooses a gift from the pile and opens it.
- Player #2 can either open a new gift or steal Player #1’s opened gift. If a gift is stolen, the person who lost it gets to choose another gift.
- We continue until everyone has a gift. To keep things moving, Colleen may set a rule that each gift can only be stolen 2 times.
- At the end, everyone goes home with the gift they’re holding.
Secret Santa vs. White Elephant
With Secret Santa, you shop for a particular person. With White Elephant, you never know which gift you'll end up with—and the stealing and swapping are all part of the fun!
