ONLINE: SJAA Imaging Meeting
Details
Shooting landscapes at night presses our cameras and lenses to the limits of their performance … and requires us to learn new skills to apply at the camera. Alan will cover some “best practices” in the field such as “ETTR,” using moonlight to our advantage, and shooting separate images for sky and ground. While stacking images has long been popular, new AI-driven noise reduction routines make it less necessary. However, using a star tracker can open up many new opportunities. As can shooting multiple images for panoramas. Adding filters provides another tool for improving nightscapes, with the use of H-alpha filters becoming popular among nightscapers. In this talk, Alan will cover new techniques and gear that can take your nightscapes to a new level.
Alan is one of Canada’s best known astrophotographers and is co-author with Terence Dickinson of the popular handbook for amateur astronomers, The Backyard Astronomer’s Guide. He is a contributing editor to Sky & Telescope magazine and is a member of The World at Night international astrophoto group ([TWANight.org](http://twanight.org/)). He worked for many years as a show producer at planetariums and science centers in Alberta. Asteroid #78434 is named for him. He can be reached through his website amazingsky.com.
