This event is one of several different introductions to astronomy offered by SJAA. And it's a special one at that! During this talk, three young and aspiring women of astronomy will tell you about several amazing women of astronomy, spanning the last 500 years up to the present. Throughout history (and sometimes still today!) women were considered insufficiently capable for scientific work, or their accomplishments were appropriated or overshadowed by the men of their days. In reality, they've been making significant contributions all along, so it's time we highlight and recognize some of their work! We’ll meet pioneers who paved the way for those who are still finding awesome stuff in our universe today.

We'll take the first 15 minutes to give a short tour of the night sky using the planetarium software Stellarium. The talk will start at 7:15pm.

Women In Astronomy will be presented by Lucy, Neha and Suchi.

Lucy is a high school senior hoping to pursue astronomy as a career. She was one of those kids who would never stop asking “why” and fell in love with astronomy in seventh grade. She has special interests in astrobiology and hopes to share her curiosity about what space has to offer.

Neha is a high school senior who wants to be an astrophysicist, with a special interest in stellar variability and binary stars. She's been obsessed with stars and galaxies since she was a little kid reading about space in the Milpitas Library, and now she wants to share the wonder of our universe with others!

Suchi loves stargazing and landscape astrophotography. She has lived in cities for most of her life and was quite amazed to see stars from when she moved to a remote suburb. She enjoys visual astronomy, participates in the local astronomy clubs wherever she goes, and thinks everyone must experience the wonder of looking at a sky filled with stars.

Many of SJAA’s events, like this one, are public and free to attend, but if you’re enjoying what SJAA has to offer, consider becoming a paid member for only $20 per year: https://www.sjaa.net/membership/benefits-of-membership-2/

This event is an on-line Zoom event, complementing our in-person events in Houge Park.
