Measles cases are surging in dozens of states. The avian flu virus, H5N1, continues to spread among birds and mammals globally, as scientists monitor its potential to become the next pandemic. We know how to stop both viruses. So why don’t we?

Senior science correspondent Jon Cohen writes extensively about infectious diseases and the conditions that can turn them into epidemics and pandemics. He has been reporting on the spread of H5N1 and our attempts to contain it.

In conversation with science journalist Molly Bentley, host of Big Picture Science, Cohen will discuss the drivers behind, and the costs of rising vaccine skepticism, and the country’s abandonment of pandemic preparedness. His new book Planning Miracles: How to Prevent Future Pandemics, will be available for purchase after the event.
