"HIV: Myth and Reality"
with Dr. Stan Shapiro
People who have denied that HIV causes AIDS have been around since at least the 1990s, and the topic is the cover story in the September-October issue of Skeptical Inquirer magazine. To bring a brief overview of the history of this infection and some of the difficulties in definition that have allowed doubters to gain traction, Dr. Stan Shapiro will present a few clinical vignettes from his own experience at Café Inquiry on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Dr. Shapiro will also discuss the influence of government policy (or lack thereof) that has had an impact on disease transmission, treatment and epidemiology.
Dr. Shapiro is an Infectious Disease physician at Permanente in Panorama City and has been involved in AIDS care and treatment for almost 20 years. His views are his own and not in any way reflective of Southern California Permanente Medical Group as an organization.
Cafe Inquiry is a monthly casual get-together where you can have a coffee and chat with other people on various topics of science. A guest speaker opens the discussion with a brief intro to the subject and then the floor is open. All are welcome!
